When’s a good time to get my hearing checked?

Oct 10, 2024

Most of us do not wait until we’re walking into walls before getting our eyes examined. And we know that most people do not wait until their teeth start falling out to schedule a dental visit. It’s sad to report that most people wait years before getting their ears looked at.

If you are 50 years of age or older, and you haven’t had your hearing checked, it’s time to schedule an appointment with an Audiologist. Hearing loss is a chronic condition. It happens gradually, and we are usually the last ones to notice. When we misinterpret or miss parts of a conversation, it can have a significant impact on relationships both at home and in the workplace.

If you have parents, grandparents, or other family members with hearing loss, it raises red flags. Family history is a potential risk factor for changes in hearing. Schedule an evaluation as a starting point.

A history of noise exposure can damage your ears, whether it was sitting in front of the amp at a Rolling Stones concert, working in a factory without ear protection, or time spent in the military. Noise exposure puts you at risk for changes in hearing. If you remember your ears feeling plugged, stuffed, or ringing, the damage has been done. And although it may have happened many years ago, it’s bound to show up years later.

It is clearly documented that there are medical conditions related to changes in hearing. These commonly include heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes. A combination of any factors increases your risk for changes in your hearing. An Audiologist will make a personalized plan for follow-up.

It’s always the right time to get your ears checked if you notice any changes in your hearing. Take charge and make an appointment to see an Audiologist. We’re waiting for you.
